To Make Guests Feel Included and Comfortable
If you are having a religious or traditional wedding, guests of other faiths or cultures may not understand some portions of the ceremony, or may feel lost if their participation is expected (a song, a communion, etc)

To Break the Ice
Some of your guests may not know the members of the wedding party.  A family friend that you’ve not seen for many years may not know your spouse-to-be, or even remember your maid of honor sister who has grown up since the last time he saw her

As a Roadmap for Guests
Guests with special needs – such as those with small children or health concerns – will appreciate being able to gauge how far in to the ceremony things have progressed in case they feel a need to step out early
